In the dying rays of the low winter sun on 25 February 1988 the 1447 Penzance - Plymouth stopping service accelerates away from the Par station stop formed of recently transferred Class 101/108 vehicles 53247+53646, now formed into power twin set P872 allocated to Laira. New to South Gosforth shed (52J) with partner E56219 on 10th September 1957, E50247 spent the first 21 years of its life allocated to the north eastern depot before moving the short distance to HT in late July 1978. On 4th October 1987 it was transferred to the Western Region depot of LA where it was paired with 53646 to become set P872. Just over three years later on 27th November 1990 both were withdrawn with 53247 being scrapped at Mayer Parry, Snailwell and 53646 suffering the same fate at Gwent Demolition, Margam.
