Class 108 vehicles 53953 and 54242 depart Newcastle for a trip up the ECML with the 17:45 to Morpeth on Wednesday 23/8/89. In the background, platform construction work is underway, including the outer island platform, which was initially numbered 15 and 16 when opened for local services in 1989. All the platforms were renumbered soon afterwards, the outer island becoming platforms 5, 6, 7 and 8, and the platform from which this photograph was taken renumbered from 8 to 2.
