A 2-car Class 101 DMU, led by car E51223, is seen at Durham in 1985 waiting to return to Newcastle. There used to be several of these services at sporadic intervals through the daytime timetable with more in the evening peak, each also calling at the one intermediate station, Chester-le-Street), at a time when Durham was typically served by just one Inter-City service per hour in each direction through the daytime, plus Trans-Pennine services every two hours. Inter-City Cross-Country services to Birmingham and beyond also called at Durham, but only ran every few hours at this time.
