Details

E50004; Sheffield, January 1967. E50004 was the first DMU to be painted at Doncaster in rail-blue livery; the double-arrow symbols were painted by hand. BR produced a Design Manual when the double arrow was introduced, and this showed that the double arrow always faced forward when displayed on a ship's funnel. The paintshop at Doncaster mis-interpreted this, thinking that - as with the original BR crest - the arrow should always face the front, and so E50004 emerged from Doncaster incorrectly liveried on the driver's side. I don't know how long this remained before being corrected.
