 DMU

23rd October 1978

Two refurbished Class 116 DMUs on a Birmingham - Kidderminster local seen east of Smethwick Rolfe Street, on the Stour Valley line, on 23 October 1978. Stuart Mackay Collection.

 DMU

18th September 1964

With a cloud of exhaust a class 101 dmu leaves Smethwick Rolfe Street behind as it departs for Wolverhampton High Level. The station has changed considerably since the 18th September 1964 when Peter Shoesmith took this photograph, the canopy, footbridge and up side buildings have gone, a casualty of electrification. Sad though it is to loose the footbridge at least some light falls on the drab platforms now. The station is built in a difficult position on a tight curve and close to Rolfe Street bridge, the rail cant means a big step out of trains on the down side. The station was built in 1852 and is now the first station on the line north from Birmingham New Street. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
