DMU Accident

Bracebridge Gas Sidings Signalbox (near Lincoln), ER - 25/01/63

A 2-car power/trailer Dery Heavyweight DMU (later Class 114) working the 10.26am Grantham to Lincoln Central collided with the rear (tender) of a stationary Class B1. 2 persons killed, 3 injured. The power car of the DMU was extensively damaged at the front end and the leading bogie was driven back two feet. The light engine had been allowed to wait on the Down line in preparation for reversal and its presence there had been forgotten by the signalman.

A pdf of the original accident report can be found on the Railways Archive website, as can a summary.

These are some of the official images taken following the incident:

rear view of steam loco Front-on view of smashed DMU cab Left side view of smashed DMU cab Right side view of smashed DMU cab Outside view of DMU side Interior view of DMU with seats misaligned Interior view of DMU with a sliding door that has fallen off

Despite the extensive damage to the DMBS, its identity remains a mystery. There were no withdrawals for many years, was it repaired?
