Destination Blinds

LMR Stoke & Manchester South Division late 1950s

This one is a slightly earlier variation of LMR Stoke & Manchester South Division early 1960s destination blind and dates from the late 50s.

I suspect this photo — of a Class 104 DMU at Preston (close up of the blind shown below) — is the blind listed here and was probably part of the influx of blue square DMUs (principally Class 104 units) that replaced the outgoing Derby Lightweight sets, all of which were transferred to Llandudno Junction. There are subtle differences from the blinds originally fitted to the Derby Lightweights, which are shown in photos Derby lightweight at Derby C&W Works and Derby lightweight at Derby C&W Works.

It has the makers stamp of Kelbus and printed on fabric. It has white letters on black. There is no stamp to indicate the area (i.e. BIRMINGHAM A) as per the early 60s version of the blind, but the same style of rubber stamp has instead been used to reflect the destination for the driver to use when setting the right location.

All 2-line locations are composed in perspective lettering, as per the close up above.
