Class 104 DMU at Salwick

28th June 1980

The guard was looking back, as a well filled six-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50475 at the rear, was stood at Salwick with the 16.45 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 28th 1980. The single island platform still retained its L&Y platform canopy in faded 1950's BR maroon & cream paint. The platform buildings at Salwick were demolished in the early 1970's, but the canopy remained until around 1990, and inevitably has since been replaced by a small shelter. Long grass had reclaimed where there was once a well-kept station garden. To the left of the DMU is the site of the former fast lines, removed in 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 104 DMU at Midge Hall

20th May 1983

Former Manchester/Blackpool 'White Line' Class 104, minus its centre trailer car with Motor Brake Second M53475 leading, passes Cocker Bar Farm as it runs between Midge Hall and Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on May 20th 1983. The Midge Hall distant signal for Northbound services is located adjacent to the farm access bridge. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 104 DMU at Derby RTC

15th March 1986

M53475 at Derby RTC, where it spent a short spell apparently as a carriage washing test coach, later renumbered ADB977342. Taken on the 15th March 1986. Ian Francis.

Class 104 DMU at Ashford Down Yard

13th July 1987

W in 9/85 from Newton Heath class 104 DMBS 53475 was dispatched to Derby RTC for departmental use. It never received its allocated departmental number ADB 977342 and was supposedly withdrawn from departmental use in 11/85 with no work undertaken and allocated for scrap. It clung on in a twilight existence for several years before being allocated to the the DM&EE (Divisional Mechanical & Electric Engineers), downgraded to unpowered status as hauled stock and given the TOPS code QXV. After languishing for several years at Derby it was put to use as a Carriage Washing Machine Test Vehicle. What this entailed isn't documented but I suspect it was just used to check clearances and capabilities of refurbished or new carriage washers. To that end it paid a visit to Ashford probably to test the new Down Yard Carriage Washer after which it spent months dumped in Ashford Down Yard labelled as condemned. It eventually went to Vic Berry's in Leicester being broken up in 12/88. Adrian Nicholls.
