Now this is a rare bird, out of the 302 BRC&W class 104 units to be built, this is one of only 15 DTCL's to be built. M56182 is also the only one to survive into preservation, because of its second role in life in the departmental fleet as Buxton allocated Sandite unit ADB977554.Seen at Buxton on the 14th February 1988. The grounded body of 51861 made a sorry sight at Bletchley Depot surrounded by 54182 at the far end of the row on the left, and the row on the right consisting of from far to near 51883 then 76227, 70778 and 62118 of EMU set 310093. 9th April 1986. S Gaskell.

Class 104 DMBS no. 53437 of Cricklewood (nearest camera) and DTCL no. 54182 of Bletchley but on loan to Cricklewood seen isolated on their own in the carriage sidings at Old Oak Common on 25th February 1987. 53437 was seemingly most often paired as a power twin in its later years rather than with a driving trailer although I saw it again a few months later paired with class 121 DTS 54283. Happily both vehicles as pictured here were preserved although via different routes, 53437 being one of the original batch preserved after tender lists were issued by BR and 54182 later following use as a Sandite vehicle.
