Back in 1983, electrification towards Cambridge only extended to Royston on the GN route and to Bishop's Stortford on the GE. The King's Cross line had lost its through services and a dmu shuttle was provided from Royston to Cambridge. Refurbished Metro-Cammell sets were used for many years and these retained First Class accommodation. E51442 came from the NER in 1977 and spent 10 years allocated to Cambridge, here partnering E56402 it has arrived on the 10.20 from Cambridge and is awaiting passengers off the 09.40 from King's Cross. 19th February 1983.
