Following a very dull Autumn day, a gash in the cloud cover as the sun was setting provided some dramatic lighting as Class 101 two-car set 101682 (53256 & 51505) was stood at Romiley with the 16.24 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service on October 14th 2000. Although in BR Regional Railways livery, the well-worn looking 42 year old DMU was actually part of the First North Western Class 101 fleet, then based at Manchester Longsight Depot and seeing out their last days on services from Piccadilly to Marple, Rose Hill & Sheffield. The 101's staggered on until the final five sets were withdrawn from service on Christmas Eve 2003.
