Complete with a discoloured white cab roof, two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53431 & Driving Motor Lavatory Second M53512 was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on May 3rd 1987. The well-worn unit was having an extended period of operation due to the sidelining of the then ailing almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The unit would become a spare set at Chester Depot in November 1989 due its poor condition until it was officially withdrawn in June 1990, as new Class 150/2 Sprinters began to appear in quantity from BREL York.
