Transferred from Tyseley Depot in Birmingham, a Class 116 DMU (minus its centre trailer Car), formed of cars 53059 & 53109 was arriving at Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on August 4th 1987. The leading Driving Motor Brake Second (53059) still has its Tyseley Depot chalked ID board in the front window (TS291 11/7/87). Various first generation DMU sets that were still in operational condition, were drafted in to Newton Heath Depot during this period to cover for the then almost new and ailing Class 142 Pacer fleet.
