This Tyseley based class 116 DMU set had arrived at Hastings as a 2x3-car formation running as special 1Z36 having originated at Bicester and been chartred by Chiltern Trains for a day excursion to the Sussex Seaside on May 19, 1984. With the direct route via Tunbridge Wells still gauge restricted at this time the special had run via Ashford to terminate at Hastings. The empty stock is seen berthed in what used to be called the Brighton Siding adjacent to platform 1 which was still a through loop rather than bay platform back then, both tracks having now been removed at this end.
