Two Derby suburban triple DMUs are seen at Knowle & Dorridge with a Wellington service on 15 June 1961. Michael Mensing.
A Derby suburban triple set in 1966. M50116 is closest, probably at Tyseley depot the only depot it was ever allocated to. Walter Burt Collection.
Class 116 set TY523 (presumably 50116 + 59023 + 50055) seen departing from Chester Road (Birmingham) circa April/May 1977. Michael Mensing.
This Tyseley based class 116 DMU set had arrived at Hastings as a 2x3-car formation running as special 1Z36 having originated at Bicester and been chartred by Chiltern Trains for a day excursion to the Sussex Seaside on May 19, 1984. With the direct route via Tunbridge Wells still gauge restricted at this time the special had run via Ashford to terminate at Hastings. The empty stock is seen berthed in what used to be called the Brighton Siding adjacent to platform 1 which was still a through loop rather than bay platform back then, both tracks having now been removed at this end. Adrian Nicholls.
Class 116 set TS611 (53116 presumably with 59611 + 53055) with an afternoon Birmingham Moor St - Stratford Upon Avon service waiting time at Small Heath on Monday 10th June 1985. Colin Brooks.
Set TS611, headed by DMS 53116 (presumably with 59611 and 53055), all in an experimental WMPTE, (WM) livery, on the last few yards of its journey into Hereford, past the yard, with a passenger service from the Worcester direction. 31st August 1985. John Crooks.
On 7 September 1985, a derailment at Carnforth led to severe delays to trains between Scotland and England, resulting in this 6-car dmu formation running in the path of a the Glasgow / Dundee - Poole service between Birmingham and Reading. Seen at Oxford, closest is the distinct Class 116 set TS611 (53116/59611/53055). On the rear appears to be a 116/101/116 hybrid. On the right is a Class 121 bubble. Robert28194.
A pair of Tyseley Class 116s (led by 53116 with its non-standard front end livery) pass Malago Vale with a summer Saturday service from Weston-super-Mare to Birmingham New Street. 14 September 1985. Mike Dean.
Class 116 DMS 53116, set number T611, is seen in its distinctive livery at Tyseley on 26.12.1985. Andy Cole.
One of my favourite morning shots at Stratford-upon-Avon was this taken with the bracket signal prominent in the picture. The DMU is Tyseley set 611 (53116/59611/53055) which stood out amongst the other becauses of a slightly different paint job on the front window surround and the West Midlands PTE logo on the yellow front end. The date was 3 July 1986 with the unit was arriving at Stratford-upon-Avon forming the 06.20 from Birmingham Moor Street. Peter Tandy.
The unusually liveried class 116 DMS 53116 at the head of set TS611 formed with class 127 TSL 59611 and class 116 DMBS 53055, at Birmingham New Street on 12/Jul/1986. I recall that 53055 at the other end of the set was painted to match and I wondered at the time whether on one or other driving car the livery was inspired by a mistake in the grey band being taken too far beyond the saloon windows and then taken complete with white lining round the cab ends to make the best of a bad job. Having said that, the black cab window surrounds and the fact that the sides of every car and the cab ends were emblazoned with 'WM' logos probably suggests that it was a deliberate attempt at a special livery. Robert Chilton.
Class 116 units M53116 + M59611 + M53055 / M53837 + M59604 + M53919 at Tapton Junction, Chesterfield on the 6th September 1986 with a Birmingham New Street-Sheffield football excursion. Kevin Law.
A Class 116 / 127 hybrid set (53116 + 59611 + 53055) working a Leicester - Scarborough service at Rotherham Masborough on 18 July 1987. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Droitwich Spa on 28 September 1990 - Tyseley-based set TS412 is approaching working the 12.00 Birmingham New Street-Great Malvern. I recorded the power cars as 53116 (leading) and 51867. Lewis Bevan.
Tyseley's set T412 at Small Heath station, which should have been headed by 53102 but had been reformed with 53116, followed by 59591, 59668 and 51867, on 17/Nov/1990. The formation was a mixture of class 116, 127 and 115 which was normal for most of the four-car sets at Tyseley at the time. Robert Chilton.
T412 (53116 + 59446 + 59591 + 51860) at Redditch, having arrived as the 09:36 ex-New St, and about to form the 10:23 to New St. Note the wiring which was near to completion, spelling the end of most Tyseley DMU’s. 23rd January 1993. Gazza Prescott.
53116 at the rear of set T412, after arrival at New St as the 11.25 from Longbridge on 10/4/93. The set would reverse and then form the 12.06 to Redditch. On this day the other cars in the set were 59591, 59446 and 51860. At this time 53116 was approaching 36 years of service and would go on to achieve another two, all at Tyseley. Leonard Rogers.
53116 at the rear of set T412 (51860/59591/59446/53116) leaves University station, Birmingham, on the 12.53 Redditch - New St on 10/4/93. Leonard Rogers.
Run in conjunction with Worcester Rail Day, 20066/20138 were photographed at Hereford on 2 May 1993 on one of a series of "mini-tours" which used DMU sets T404 + T412 as the hauled stock. They had set off from Birmingham New St, and, after visiting the Open Day at Worcester, tour participants had a choice from a return trip to Gloucester, then two return trips to Hereford, before the return to Birmingham. Lewis Bevan.
Class 116 DMS 53116 is seen at Derby when operating as a three car driving motor set on 22.07.1993. Tyseley were just banging any available working cars together at this point to make up scratch sets. Andy Cole.
Tyseley set 256 is formed 53116 and 51860 (a 116/115 hybrid) and has spare vehicle 51151 added when seen at Worcester on the 22nd May 1994. Hamish Stevenson.
By September 1994 any diesel-mechanical unit from the first generation classes were quite unusual on the main line so I was to take a good sunny shot of Tyseley's 117332 passing Catholme, near Wychnor Junction, on the 17th of that month. The depot was really scratching about for serviceable units by this time and the vehicles are believed to be 53116 attached to 53055 + 51144 (all 116s despite the set number). This was an ECS move which was probably on its way to Tyseley from Derby after some attention not possible at the Birmingham facility. Peter Tandy.
Class 116 DMS 53116, set number 117332, is seen near the end of first generation use at Tyseley on 26.12.1994. At this time Tyseley were just banging any serviceable DMU's together to make scratch sets. Andy Cole.
DMBS M50055 leads Class 116 set TY523 (presumably with 59023 + 50116) and another set at Old Hill station heading for Lichfield City in late 1973. Michael Mensing.
Class 116 DMBS M50055 formed with refurbished TS, possibly 59019, and DMS M50116 of Tyseley set 523 at Redditch, Saturday 7th August 1982. Visible in the background is 56 003 waiting to continue the 'Grid Iron Grice' railtour back to London Bridge Iain Reid.
The Grid Iron Grice railtour of August 1982 offered the novelty of class 56 haulage from the Southern Region for a tour of the West Midlands on 7 August 1982. 56 003 has backed onto the rear of the train at Redditch, as one of Tyseley’s mixed up class 116 sets (TS523, M50055 and possibly M59019 + M50116) arrives and has to use the adjacent platform. Murray Liston.
The Ruddington Requiem railtour at East Leake (GCR) on 9/6/84. It was formed 53910 + 59130 + 53857 / 53055 + 59611 + 53116 / 53318 + 59114 + 53328. Mel Smith.
The Ruddington Requiem railtour at Lawfield on 9/6/84. It was formed 53910 + 59130 + 53857, 53055 + 59611 + 53116, 53318 + 59114 + 53328. Chris Lings.
A mixed DMU formation with "WM" branding, led by a Class 122 "Bubble Car" approaches Warwick on a working to Leamington Spa on 4th May 1985. While the bubble is unknown, the Class 116 is easily identifiable as set TS611 (53055 + 59611 + 53116). Bob Belcher.
A Birmingham - Reading DMU (one set formed of class 116 and 101 vehicles, the far set is TS611 presumably 53055 + 59611 + 53116) running in the path of a heavily delayed service from Scotland to the South Coast pauses at Oxford. 7th September 1985. Robert28194.
M53850 leads TS615 on a Coalville depot open day shuttle at Coalville on 1 June 1986. The Six Bells Junction website lists the other vehicles as 59591 + 53102 with the set on the rear being TS611 (53116 + 59611 + 53055). Stuart Mackay Collection.
TS611 (53055 presumably with 59611 + 53116) in it's unusual livery seen at Coalville depot on the 1st June 1986 when it was working shuttles to Leicester and Burton-on-Trent for the open day. Chris Lings.
In the summer of 1986 there was a dated train between Birmingham New Street and Barry Island. Two 3 car class 116s from Tyseley were used for this service and on 14 June 1986 the leading set (TS 611, 53055 + 59611 + 53116), pictured at Longbridge, was one of the sets with a slightly modified paint job on the front end. It's amazing what a difference a few brush strokes makes to the appearance of an otherwise standard unit. I suspect that the passenger accomodation for this long journey was a sight more comfortable in 1986 than would be provided in 2020 for an equivalent trip. Peter Tandy.
Taken on 19/9/87 at Birmingham Moor Street, a week before closure of the terminal platforms, class 116 set TS611 (53055 and presumably 59611 + 53116) waits to leave for Dorridge. The platforms reopened in 2010 and the station is now the 2nd busiest in Birmingham and arguably the best!! Stephen Burdett.
51860 at the head of set T412 (51860/59591/59446/53116) leaves University station, Birmingham, on the 12.53 Redditch - New St on 10/4/93. Leonard Rogers.
On 2 May 1993 Pathfinder ran a mini-railtour in connection with an open day at Worcester using 20138+20066. The 2 locos were, unusually, hauling two 4-car DMUs, T404 (51853+59735+59604+53919) + T412 (51860+59591+59446+53116) which ran from Birmingham New Street to Worcester via the Lickey incline, and then on to Hereford and back via Great Malvern. The first of four shots was taken as train slowed for the junction at Stoke Prior before it turned onto the single line to Droitwich and Worcester. Peter Tandy.

The second of four shots was taken after a quick drive down to Ashchurch with a couple of minutes to spare. It is interesting to note that the trees on the up side of the line were still quite small in 1993. They subsequently grew very tall and were felled in 2004. Peter Tandy.

There was plenty of time to run over to Stoke Edith, on the Worcester - Hereford line, to obtain the third of four shots. The sun still co-operated for this pleasantly rural view. Peter Tandy.

This was the final shot of four of the tour - no longer in full sun which infuriated some of the more vocal enthusiasts - but still quite an acceptable shot. It is the classic view at Stoke Edith which I expect is now so overgrown as to be unusable. Peter Tandy.
The interior of cl.115 DMBS no. 51860. It is leading set T412, which, on this day, was composed of 51860/59751/59517/53116, forming the 16.50 B'ham New St - Longbridge on 6/7/93. The train is seen between Selly Oak and Bournville and is about to pass the late-running 13.04 Plymouth - Leeds HST led by 43086. Leonard Rogers.
