Class 117 DMU set L427 (51365+59517+51407) is seen in the long closed Dinton station during a photo stop on the BR 'Wiltshire Wanderer' railtour organised by Basingstoke Area Manager, Gerald Daniels on 22/03/86, a short day tour making the most of the late winter daylight. Dinton station had closed on the 7th March 1966 and rationalisation of the former L&SWR mainline in 1967 from Salisbury to Exeter saw much of the route singled including here. The DMU is thus actually standing on the freight only line (the former up mainline) which was retained for just under two miles to serve RAF Chilmark in the west and RAF Baverstock and Royal Navy Dinton in the east. The military stores traffic to these three locations kept this section open until the late 1980's but this is believed to be the last tour onto the branch and it has all now closed.
