On a hazy and warm Summer afternoon, a Class 118/117 hybrid three-car Suburban DMU formed of cars W51328, W59509 & W51313 was stood in the single track terminus at Exmouth with a service to Exeter St Davids on July 28th 1979. The station at the East Devon seaside resort once had four platform faces and was a busy place on Summer Saturdays in the past, including through services to and from London Waterloo. The Southern Railway upgraded the station in 1924, and one of the disused island platforms with its substantial canopy was just visible to the left of the DMU. This has now been swept away, and a road that was constructed in 1981 now runs alongside the station.
