From 1979, diesel-mechanical units based at Reading replaced the 3R "Tadpole" diesel-electric units on Reading-Tonbridge duties. After a start with Metro-Cammell (class 101) units, the class 119 Gloucester Cross-Country units were used, because they had a larger and lockable cage in the brake van which was needed for mail traffic. On the evening of 17 June 1984, set L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) is seen arriving at Guildford.
