Class 119 DMU set B573 (presumably 51055 + 59417 + 51083) departs from Montpelier station with a Severn Beach - Bristol service. The slide process date was April 1973. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 119 DMU set B573 stabled in the centre road at Worcester Shrub Hill on 4 November 1977. The water filler pipe at the far end of the first vehicle tells us the DMSL is closest, the vehicles should be 51083 + 59417 + 51055. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 119 set B573 (W51083 + W59417 + W51055) at Severn Beach on 1 May 1979. Some students were conducting a passenger survey that evening and when they got to us asked "do you live on the beach"? Quick as a flash my friend Alan replied "no, I live in a house". My how we laughed. I don't think the poor lad knew what to make of that, nor our reason for travel and departing again on the same train, as it didn't fit neatly into any of his survey tick boxes!!! A spot I know well as spent 5 years going across the level crossing here on my way to and from work until 2019. Betchworth on the 22nd of November 1980 and Class 119 dmu set L573 (probably 51055/59417/51083) is I would guess about to run through as it is working the 1O70 13.10 Reading to Gatwick service. At the moment the Reading to Redhill's stop at Betchworth but not the Gatwicks so maybe it was the same 40 years ago. Set L573 seems to have worked out of Reading from at least 1980 to 1987. The driver’s door is open on a Gloucester RC&W Class 119 Driving Motor 2nd at Redhill on Friday 4th June 1982. This particular set carries number L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) which indicates that it was allocated to Reading. At the time the 119s were in use on the Reading to Gatwick Airport service, services to/from Tonbridge and the slower services to/from Reading. The real target of my camera was the incoming service on the left, the 16:38 from Brighton to Victoria. This comprised of sets 7902 and 7373. 7373 was one of many 4CIGs but 7902 is of interest in that it was one of the 12 4VEPs converted to 4VEG units with additional luggage racks and reduced seating for use on services to Gatwick Airport. From 1979, diesel-mechanical units based at Reading replaced the 3R "Tadpole" diesel-electric units on Reading-Tonbridge duties. After a start with Metro-Cammell (class 101) units, the class 119 Gloucester Cross-Country units were used, because they had a larger and lockable cage in the brake van which was needed for mail traffic. On the evening of 17 June 1984, set L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) is seen arriving at Guildford. Jeremy Chapter.

Passing a snowy Salfords and heading for Gatwick Airport is class 119 set L573 (51083 presumably with 59417 + 51055) on 9th February 1985. Ian Buck.

Creating a haze of exhaust fumes a morning Paddington - Maidenhead stopping service gets away from the station stop at Taplow on the last leg of its journey, formed by one of RG depots famous temporary hybrid sets. This time a Class 121 'Bubble Car' has replaced Class 119 driving trailer W51083 in Set L573, giving a formation of W55024+W59417+W51055. I think it is fairly safe to assume that as W51083 was officially withdrawn in mid March its running days were already over when this picture was taken. 12th February 1988. Nigel Mack.
