I was mildly surprised to see the "Midline Bubble" on the main line from Derby to Birmingham in May 1988 when it was photographed approaching Water Orton. Mechanical DMUs were not common on this line at the time with Sprinters having taken over most services. The destination board said that the unit was "Not in Service" but wasn't able to find out where it had been but assumed that it was going to Tyseley LMD. The relatively new M42 and part of the long-gone Hams Hall Power station can be seen in the background of this picture.
