The rare appearance of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' Two-Car DMU in the Preston area for a few brief days in the Spring of 1987. Formed of cars E54027 & E53019, the unit was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland Station with an early morning Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 4th 1987. The 114's were synonymous with services in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire and were not common visitors to Preston. This was the period when errant Class 142's saw first generation DMU's having an extended period of operation. First introduced in 1956, the last of the Class 114's were withdrawn from passenger service in 1992.
