The rare appearance of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' two-car DMU, formed of cars E54027 & E53019, stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on May 3rd 1987. The following day it worked a Blackpool North - Manchester Victoria service. This was the period when faults on relatively new Class 142's were causing the cobbling together/transfer and reinstatement of first generation DMU sets, prior to the introduction of Class 150/2 Sprinters in sufficient quantities. Martyn Hilbert.
The rare appearance of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' Two-Car DMU in the Preston area for a few brief days in the Spring of 1987. Formed of cars E54027 & E53019, the unit was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland Station with an early morning Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 4th 1987. The 114's were synonymous with services in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire and were not common visitors to Preston. This was the period when errant Class 142's saw first generation DMU's having an extended period of operation. First introduced in 1956, the last of the Class 114's were withdrawn from passenger service in 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
Mainly associated with Lincolnshire, some of the Derby built heavyweight units were subsequently moved away. Inevitably in its quest for non-standardisation, Tyseley received some. Here, trailer 54027 leads a Corby service into Kettering on 7/1/88. The car park to the right was the site of the steam shed. Mike Dean.
Class 114 DMU set T227 (54027 + 53019) sits in Doncaster station on November 11th, 1988. They had been transferred to Tyseley from Lincoln in October 1987. Rex Holt.
I took this picture of class 114 T227 (54027 + 53019) in the bay platform at Rugby station on 16 September 1989 shortly after it had arrived from Coventry. It was quite an experience to travel on this unit as it ran flat out up the main line for the whole journey instead of its usual stop-start saunter between stations on suburban lines. The smell of very hot engines was very evident in the bay as was the sound of them clicking as they cooled. Peter Tandy.

This picture was taken at Bishopton, just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, on 28 March 1990 long before the Parkway station was built and not long after the A46 link road was opened. It shows class 114 T027 (54027 + 53019) passing Stratford East's fixed down distant signal with a train from Leamington Spa later to form the 12.12 back to the spa town. Peter Tandy.
At Droitwich Spa a 2 coach class 114 DMU formed of 54027 + 53019 works a Birmingham via Kidderminster service on 27 April 1991. When I took this photograph the garden on the station was well-tended and looked after by the staff but in 2020 the undergrowth and trees along the platform had taken over. Peter Tandy.

Derby station on 23rd April 1989. This Class 114 DMU set (formed 53019 + 54027, with a Class 116 and Class 117 on the rear out of sight) was waiting to depart for a tour of colliery branch lines in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The tour was organised by the Institute of Mining Engineers. Andrew Walker.
53019 leads 54027 as set T227 with T319 (51129, 59756, 51149) and T303 (51406, 59516, 51364) on The Institution of Mining Engineers Notts & North Derbyshire Railtour near Welbeck Colliery on a wet and overcast 23/Apr/1989. Robert Chilton.
Class 114 Set T227 (presumably 53019 + 54027) waits time at Preston (at 1400) on Friday 26th May 1989. Colin Brooks.
The Institute of Mining Engineers North Yorkshire Railtour at Sheffield on 15 October 1989. Class 114 set T027 with 53019 is closest, Six Bells Junction lists the other vehicles as 54027, T309 (51372 + 59490 + 51414) and T304 (51407 + 59517 + 51365). Stuart Mackay Collection.
One of my favourite classes of DMMU was the Derby Heavyweights, class 114. Several sets ended their days at Tyseley Depot and spent a lot of time shuttling between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa. With only 1 car powered, their performance could best be described as ponderous, but the seats were comfortable and the ambience, in my opinion at least, much better than the class 150s currently used in the area. This picture was taken during the afternoon of 28 March 1990 and shows T027 (presumably 53019 + 54027) arriving at Stratford from Leamington. Note that the signalman has already set the ground signals and the points for the train to reverse out and run back into platform 2 for the return to Leamington; this was before the track and signalling was altered to allow departures from platform 1. Peter Tandy.
Class 114 set T027 (presumably 53019 + 54027) after shunting into platform 2 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 28 March 1990 and prior to departure for Leamington Spa. The upper quadrant starter is in the off position but the guard hasn't changed the destination blind, probably realising that it wasn't worth the effort as the few passsengers using the train in the mid-afternoon would have had as good a knowledge as him where the train was going. The signal to the left of the starter controlled the exit from the down goods loop which ran behind the signalbox; this was still occasionally used at the time for stabling the stock of excursion trains. It wasn't long for this world though, being severed the following year and removed altogether within a few months. Peter Tandy.
Class 114 DMU set T027 (presumably 53019 + 54027) arrives into Cromford station on the Matlock branch on 10 July 1991. Alan Grange.
Class 114 unit T027 (cars 53019, 54027) seen stabled at Leamington Spa one evening in summer 1991. Bob Belcher.
