Cars E53262 E59075 E53150 wait at Whitby to return to Darlington via Middlesbrough, sometime in 1984. With their day out at the seaside drawing to a close, the steady stream of boarding passengers slam the heavy doors behind them and locate a comfortable but springy seat. There is a distinctive smell, and windows and other fittings vibrate as the engines idle. As departure time comes, the guard buzzes to the driver to move off, and the train slowly pulls away through the gears, to set off on a scenic journey of 35 miles to Middlesbrough, which, with 15 intermediate stops including reversal at Battersby, will take almost 90 minutes.
