Although Northwich depot (coded 8E) closed to steam on 4th March 1968, it continued to service diesel traction until 1987. Inside the running shed on 29th June 1980 was 'Derby Lightweight' DMU M51905 - M56488 in the company of class 40 No.40134. The split-headcode box class 40 was to be withdrawn during the following May and was cut up at BREL Swindon in December 1983.
