In the cab, left to right, are KWC Grand - the Western Region Manager, Harold Watkinson - the Minister of Transport, and the driver. They were part of a much larger group of officials that visited Swindon Works to view the construction of the new trains followed by on a demonstration run to London. Grounded 'white circle' Swindon built 'Intercity' ex Scottish Region DMU cars were awaiting the end at the King's scrapyard at Snailwell on a snowy November 29th 1980. The units were built in 1956 and worked between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh until 1971 when they were replaced by Class 27's on push-pull duties.
