Withdrawn Swindon Inter-City DMUs at Ely on 6 August 1978. They were a common sight there for several years as they awaited movement to Snailwell for disposal. On the left is SC79164, in the centre seems to be SC79086 or SC79089. Derek Hoskins.

The 19:10 Edinburgh Waverley - Glasgow Queen Street service arrives into Polmont station on 19 July 1967. Formed of a mixed livery Swindon Inter-City DMU, the set number is a little blurry but could be 607. Stuart Mackay Collection.

swindon-79xxx DMU

circa 1964

A six-car Swindon Inter-City DMU in Cowlairs station. Undated, likely in 1964 - the station closed in September 1964. The station was used by stopping trains on their way in out of Glasgow Queen Street, such as the Kirkintilloch service. The 2 on the headcode suggests it is not on it's regular express Edinburgh - Glasgow duty, but likely an Edinburgh - Glasgow stopper - there was a 4.45pm ex-Waverley in the summer 1964 timetable was all stops, except Bishopbriggs, that called at Cowlairs. Roy Hamilton.

swindon-79xxx DMU

17th July 1956

A scan from a print, showing a six-car Swindon 79xxx formation at Swindon on 17 July 1956, likely on a test run. They are in a 3+3 formation, neither has a buffet car, closest is SC79099, and SC79098 was also noted as being in the formation. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A Swindon Inter-City DMU at Bathgate on 6 April 1963. This wasn't the normal route for these sets, so possibly a diversion. Stuart Mackay Collection.

swindon-79xxx DMU

circa 1958

This undated view from the late 1950s shows an early Swindon 'Inter-City' DMU with the original paint finish and no train identification boxes. The train is passing Cheltenham Spa Malvern Road West Signal Box. Malvern Road station was on the GWR line from Honeybourne and was the second of 3 stations at Cheltenham, the others being St James (a terminus) and Cheltenham Spa (Lansdown) on the Birmingham - Bristol Line. Behind the signal can be seen the loco shed, a sub shed of Gloucester, the yards are full of freight wagond awaiting unloading or dispatch. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

18th July 1967

A mixed livery Swindon E&G DMU (set 605) approaches Falkirk Grahamston with the 11:30 Glasgow Queen Street - Waverley service on 18 July 1967. At this time there was a half hourly service between the two cities, trains on the hour from each end were fast services via Falkirk High, normally taking 56 minutes. Services on the half hour were stoppers running via Falkirk Grahamston and normally taking 71 minutes. Note the Park Royal railbus in the siding, likely 79971, in between services to Grangemouth. Stuart Mackay Collection.

swindon-79xxx DMU

11th April 1971

From a negative that has deteriorated, but still of interest. It shows a Swindon Inter-City DMU at Turnhouse on 11 April 1971, which was Easter Sunday. This was recorded as a diversion, presumably a Glasgow - Edinburgh service that used the Winchburgh Junction to Dalmeny line then reversed. Stuart Mackay Collection.

swindon-79xxx DMU

circa early 1957

A Scottish Region publicity image (negative 5830) showing a Swindon Inter-City DMU ascending Cowlairs Incline and going under Keppochhill Road bridge as it heads away from Glasgow Queen Street. This is probably circa early 1957, the six-car train is in a 3+3 formation rather than what would become the normal 2PC + 2CC + 2PC layout, and neither has a buffet car. Note also the Glasgow - Edinburgh sideboards. Image courtesy of the AA McLean Collection. British Railways.
