Resting on a Sunday at the newly built DMU maintenance depot at Norwich is E79257, 13/5/56. The Metro Cammell Lightweight vehicle just visible on the right is E79049). Ron Hodge.

 DMU

circa July 1956

An Eastern Region publicity image showing the 'new diesel maintenance depot at Norwich'. Met-Camm 'lightweight' sets can be seen inside, the closest vehicle on the centre road is E79266. Undated, but the image appeared in the Railway Gazette magazine dated 17th August 1956 and so was probably taken circa July 1956. Image courtesy of the Chris Booth Collection. British Railways.

 DMU

circa 1970

The fleet of 40 Class 100 2-car units were built by Gloucester RC&W Co in two batches for local services around Edinburgh (although eleven units were initially delivered to the Manchester area for a short period). Changing traffic patterns in the late 1960s saw them transferred to Norwich Thorpe depot for local services in East Anglia, where they remained until the end of the 1970s - regarded as non-standard, withdrawals started relatively early, though the final car lasted in passenger service until 1988. This tatty unit had evidently been transferred to Norwich by the time of this shot, which appears to be the early 1970s. The window bars suggest it has spent time in the North East, meaning this is probably 56099. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 100 DMBS E51111 at Norwich. Undated, with the vehicle stripped of all underframe equipment this is likely some time after withdrawal which was September 1973. It would be scrapped at TW Ward, Briton Ferry, arriving there in August 1974. The seats seem to still have their original coverings. Stuart Mackay Collection.

 DMU

23rd June 1978

Set: 69

Stabled at Norwich MPD on Friday the 23rd June 1978 is Class 105 DTCL 56435, half of Norwich Set No.69. I believe from my records that the vehicle behind is the other half of Set No.69 Class 100 DMBS 51120. Interestingly 51120 was withdrawn just 6 days after this image was taken on the 29th June 1978 being scrapped at Mayer Newman, Snailwell during May 1981. 56435 would continue in service for almost another 6 years however being withdrawn in May 1984 before following 51120 through the firing tunnel at Snailwell in October 1984. Bob Woolnough.

Withdrawn from use in August 1976 Class 100 DMBS No.51114 had been used as a source of spare parts for nearly 2 years when I took this image of her on Norwich MPD on the 23rd June 1978 and presents a sorry sight. She was eventually scrapped at Mayer Newman, Snailwell in March 1981. Bob Woolnough.
