Vehicle: 56089
A Class 101 DMU at Gateshead East, 19/04/1980. Containing cars E56089 + E51214, it calls with a service to Sunderland. Typical of the period, the train shows a mismatch of Refurbished and Blue + Grey Livery. Unfortunately, the attractive Refurbished Livery was found to get dirty rather quickly, so it was decided to outshop refurbished vehicles in Blue + Grey livery, which had previously been for Inter-City / Cross-Country vehicles only. In this view, 56089 also carries the logo of Tyne & Wear PTE within the blue band, as well as a tail lamp. Gateshead East station, situated between Newcastle and Heworth, closed on 23/11/1981, replaced by the Tyneside Metro. Graeme Phillips Collection.
