Reconstruction work at Manchester London Road station c1959. A grainy scan from the Transport Age magazine issued by the BTC on the Manchester - Crewe electrification scheme that formed the start of the wider WCML electrification. It shows what was then London Road station, it was re-named Piccadilly on 12/9/60. These major works saw the shortening of the two Victorian train sheds as can be clearly seen here. The general messiness of the works - with passengers making their way around heaps of rubble is a far cry from today's building sites! A relatively modern BRC&W DMU sits under partially complete overhead gantries for the 25kv AC scheme - on the far side of the station would be the 1500v DC overhead of the Sheffield lines. In the bottom right is a propped up sign for "Mayfield Station" - the overspill and relief platforms, mostly for suburban services, that closed to passengers in 1960. Scan and notes courtesy of Mike Ashworth. British Railways.

Derby Lightweight two-car DMU set M79173 + M79674 at Manchester London Road. Date unknown, the vehicles arrived in the Manchester area in September 1957 and would spent time at Gorton, Reddish and Longsight before withdrawal in July 1967. Note the cab roof dome colours. On the power car they are the same colour as the roof, indicating they are formed from alloy. On the trailer they are white, indicating fibreglass. Stuart Mackay Collection.
With electrification work in progress, two two-car Derby Lightweight DMUs arrive at Manchester London Road with the 3.0pm ex-Marple on 9th April 1960. On the left is English Electric Type 4 D236, between it an the church is a steam loco, the electrification train behind the DMU has a 350hp diesel shunter at the far end. Note also the significant number of young spotters crammed onto the platform end on the lower left. Michael Mensing.
