Vehicle: 50832   Set: TS540

A class 116 dmu (set TS540, presumably 50832 + 59029 + 50885) has just left Nuneaton Trent Valley station and approaches the site of Nuneaton Abbey Street station (closed 1968) 28/8/1977 with a Leicester to Birmingham New Street service. The end cottage on the left bears evidence that the occupants were supporters of the notorious career criminal George Davis who was wrongly imprisoned for an offence but ended up committing numerous crimes! DMU

14th September 1959

Nuneaton Abbey station looks a little bleak on a cloudy 14th September 1959. The station was located on Midland Road and served the housing estates rather than the town centre. Behind the station is the large Judkins Quarry complex this supplied the area with a constant film of dust which covered everything in the immediate vicinity. The opposite platform has a water crane still in use the station closed to passengers 4th March 1968. Approaching the station is an LMR 3 car Cravens unit on a Nottingham - Birmingham working. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
