 DMU

10th September 1977

With the cobbled roadway of the former goods yard on the right, a well filled three-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M50453, M59161 & M50505, complete with two first class saloons, was passing Salwick at speed with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on Saturday September 10th 1977. The former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway signalbox dating from 1889, was retained at Salwick as a fringe box to the Preston PSB. The structure which must have been a busy place when the route between Preston and Kirkham had four tracks, was 'modernised' with UPVC windows and a lowered internal ceiling in later years. The 'box was closed in November 2017 as a prelude to resignalling and electrification between Preston and Blackpool North, and was demolished on December 19th 2017. The now electrified Blackpool-Preston route is signalled from the ROC at Ashburys. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

3rd April 1978

Running at full speed, a BRCW Class 104 three-car 'Manchester-Blackpool White Liner' with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) M50522 leading, was passing the island platform of Salwick station whilst running between Kirkham and Preston with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on April 3rd 1978. Allocated to Newton Heath depot, these well-worn 104's were a familiar sight along this busy route at the time. To the right of the DMU was the site of a pair of fast lines that once avoided the station platform at Salwick, a legacy from the days when the four track route from Preston to Kirkham North Junction handled huge amounts of excursion traffic. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

28th June 1980

The guard was looking back, as a well filled six-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50475 at the rear, was stood at Salwick with the 16.45 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 28th 1980. The single island platform still retained its L&Y platform canopy in faded 1950's BR maroon & cream paint. The platform buildings at Salwick were demolished in the early 1970's, but the canopy remained until around 1990, and inevitably has since been replaced by a small shelter. Long grass had reclaimed where there was once a well-kept station garden. To the left of the DMU is the site of the former fast lines, removed in 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

21st August 1982

Set: C555

A Class 120 DMU carrying set number C555 (51590 + 59582 + 51576) with a Class 104 on the rear is seen at Salwick on 21 August 1982. John Horne Collection.

 DMU

15th August 1983

A Swindon built Class 120 DMU sweeps through Salwick Station whilst working a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North Service on August 15th 1983. Although the station buildings were demolished in the early 1970s, the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway platform canopy was retained, now sadly replaced by a small shelter. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

29th October 1983

On an Autumn evening, one of the Newton Heath allocated well-appointed and stylish Swindon built Cross-Country Class 120 DMU's, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory M51588 leading, coupled to a class 104 set, passes Salwick with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on October 29th 1983. Just visible through the bridge is Salwick station then complete with its Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway island platform canopy. On the extreme left is the cobbled access road to the former goods yard. This stretch of railway once had four running lines in the days when the three Blackpool stations were busy with express, residential and a prodigious amount of excursion traffic. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

15th October 1988

A Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M53451 & M53518 was departing from Salwick with a Blackpool South to Colne service on October 15th 1988. This was the period when Salwick still retained its former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway platform canopy. A location that is no longer accessible on the former goods yard cobbled roadway. Martyn Hilbert.
