With Lowestoft showing on the destination blind, GRC&W set 64 heads away from the camera past a Neptune System track machine in the siding to the north east of Saxhumdham station. With bars over the passenger door droplights, this was a vehicle that had previously spent time at South Gosforth and is likely E56307, which dates to circa 1972/3. Running 'wrong line' at Saxmundham after a snow shower on Wednesday February 8th 1978 is Norwich based Cravens twin set no. 54 (E56436 + E51254) forming the 10.50 Lowestoft - Ipswich. Still retaining the twin headcode boxes, this original style of front end was rapidly disappearing by 1978 as cars went through Doncaster Works, reappearing with flush fronts. An ER publicity image showing a works outing for 80 staff from Wm. C. Reade of Aldeburgh Ltd (a company that still exists) on a day trip to London, taken at Saxmundham circa January 1958. It was noted as the first diesel train from the area to make this trip. British Railways.

Class 101 DMU set No. 100 (51508 + 59095 + 53181) stands at Saxmundham working the 12:55 Lowestoft to Ipswich service on 20 August 1990. It can be hard to tell which power car is which in these Norwich TBSL sets but this is an easy one when it contained these vehicles as 51508 has the orange cantrail stripe, 53181 didn't. Also 51508 has mid-level vac pipes, 53181 had high level ones. Brian Creasey.
