On a damp June 29th 1985, a Derby Etches Park (EP522) Swindon 'Cross-Country' Class 120 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53678 leading, was stabled between duties in the now removed bay platform on the East side of Stafford station alongside Railway Street. This was taken during the period of the Crewe Remodelling project when no trains were serving Crewe and many services were starting and terminating at Stafford, with all through services on the WCML using the normally freight only Crewe Independent Lines that bypass Crewe station. During the Crewe Engineering Blockade in the summer of 1985 the only way for passengers to reach Crewe was via a DMU shuttle service from Stafford. This is the shuttle train, photo taken at 05.20 hrs on 18 July 1985. The unit consists of cars 54487 + 51904 / 51175 + 54350. Lewis Bevan.

When the Class 127 DMUs finally bowed out of the St. Pancras - Bedford services, 22 power cars were resurrected from store at Carlisle Upperby (one of them, the pioneer 51591, was re-claimed from the NRM) and converted for parcels use. They were formed into 11 two car sets and allocated to Longsight in Manchester. Here set 918 with 55978 at the rear of 55968 is being led by set 912 (55972 & 55982) at Stafford, 20/Aug/1988.
