The support arms, but not the wires, for the Ayrline Electrification have been installed at Troon setting the date to circa 1985. The Glasgow - Ayr electrified service came into operation in September 1986. 53160 and 59049 make up the first two vehicles in the Class 101 set. Andrew McConnell.

A 6-car Class 126 Swindon Inter-City set. The folks at Scot-Rail.co.uk and 'Mad Mac' identified the location as being between Troon and Barassie, the train heading towards Glasgow. The building in the background is the old Barassie Works. Date unknown. Stuart Rankin.

A year before electrification, a 6 car class 107 dmu departs Troon with a Stranraer - Glasgow Central service on 25-08-1985. 107444 (presumably 52005 + 59804 + 52031) is on the rear, the front set has a Met-Camm centre car. A class 126 d.m.u. northbound on the Troon avoiding line at Troon on 27-11-82. Image by A. Wilson. For nearly 25 years, these B.R. Swindon built units were the mainstay of the routes from Glasgow to Ayrshire. This view shows a train probably from Stranraer to Glasgow avoiding the Troon stop on the loop line. This was the original main line and was superseded in 1892 when the loop was built, bringing the passenger station into the town. This avoiding line closed the day after this, on 28-11-1982, in preparation for re-signalling and electrification. Here, the old line has been integrated into the Fullarton golf course, and a footpath runs along the old trackbed. Gordon Thomson.

A class 120 / 101 dmu arrives at Troon with the 18.00 Glasgow Central - Ayr on 22-08-1986, as 47486 departs with the all first class 18.45 Ayr - Glasgow Central. This was formed of the 'Nightrider' train, which later in the evening formed an overnight service to London. It had earlier formed the 17.30 Glasgow Central - Ayr. Electric services started at the end of the following month. Although carrying set number 52 it is believed to be set 520 formed 53711 + 59046 + 53749. Gordon Thomson.
