Formed of two GRC&W DMUs with a Derby suburban triple set between, 51104 leads the Cross Country unit with Tyseley set number 512 in the left cab window and its M prefix - changed from its original W - noticeably lighter than the vehicle number. The DMBS is not carrying the usual Tyseley set number in the cab window but seems to be a recent transfer from further south judging by the remains of a set number under the drivers window and lack of destination blind and is presumably 50854. In the days when it was possible to sit at the front of a diesel multiple unit and (assuming that the driver had not lowered the blind) it was possible to enjoy a "driver's eye" view of the track ahead. On board a class 116 unit as a similar unit passes in the opposite direction on the section of route between Solihull and Lapworth that used to be four tracks. Taken in September 1984 from 51130 on a Leamington Spa service. Bob Belcher.
