A fantastic line up of Swindon DMUs at Ayr with numerous Class 126s and a stray Class 120. Undated, the 120 is probably an ex-Inverness set which dates it to 1980 or 1981. The sets in the bay platform will be on services to Glasgow Central, the units behind the wall on the right are in Kyle Street sidings. Stuart Mackay Collection.

The Way it Was. Inter-City Class 126 DMU flying through Hillington East on the 16:35 Glasgow Central to Girvan working. Unless checked by signals, DMUs by this point would be flat out. Only Inverclyde EMU services stopped here and on late afternoons at that time, guards would deposit bundles of evening newspapers from their EMU brake vans for waiting delivery boys. The Class 126 diesel units built for the Ayrshire Coast and introduced in 1959 were designed so that they could be formed as 6-car trains with through gangways. The gangway connections were removed and panelled over from the 1970s to prevent draughts in the driving cab. One such carriage is seen here at Ayr on August 30, 1981. Jeremy Chapter.
