Having arrived at journeys end on one of the well-patronised services from Manchester Victoria, and with Driving Motor Brake Second M50474 bringing up the rear of a six-car formation, alighted passengers were making their way out of the station at Blackpool North on an overcast August 12th 1979. In the bright & breezy British Telecom livery and reduced to two cars, Class 118 set B460 formed of driving cars 51302 & 51317 was coupled to a blue/grey liveried Class 122 single unit whilst stood at Starcross with an Exeter St Davids to Paignton stopping service on May 29th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.
A Pressed Steel built Class 117 3-Car Suburban Unit, T308 with Driving Motor Second 51413 leading (presumably with 59509 + 51371), was stood at Lostock Hall with the Sunday Preston to Carlisle 'DalesRail' service on July 2nd 1988. Running via Blackburn and Clitheroe, this service ran along the Ribble Valley line prior to regular passenger services being reinstated in 1991. Martyn Hilbert.
Whilst alighted passengers make their way down the platform, the crew have a conversation in the cab of Class 104 Driving Motor Composite M50528 whilst it was stood at Bolton leading a six-car Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 23rd 1979. This was very much a routine daily sight along this busy route in the 1970's, with the BRCW Class 104's working most services to and from the Fylde Coast. Martyn Hilbert.
Having carried it's last passengers, Cravens Class 105 Two-Car DMU formed of cars 53381 & 54439, had been relegated to mail and parcels duties, seeing out its last few months in traffic before withdrawal. The unit was stabled with a Class 114 at Leeds Neville Hill Depot on March 15th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.
In the days when Selby was still on the East Coast Main Line, A four-car Class 108 DMU with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory E50630 was bringing up the rear of a York to Hull service on September 12th 1981. The unit was one of the Eastern Region four-car Class 108 sets that had two intermediate second class centre trailer cars. Martyn Hilbert.
On a warm Spring evening, a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51219 leading, was departing from Dawlish with an all-stations 18.23 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. This was the period when following the banishment of almost new Class 142 Skipper units to the North, still serviceable first generation DMU sets were drafted in to the West Country to keep services running, prior to the appearance of Class 150/2 and Class 155 Sprinter units. Stabled between duties, Class 115 Driving Motor Brake Second M51899 was the lead car of a four-car set at Aylesbury on January 8th 1984. Introduced in 1960 they were a familiar sight on the former Great Central and GC/GWR routes to and from London Marylebone, until the last of the fleet were withdrawn in 1992. Martyn Hilbert.
