On the first day of the Birmingham Snow Hill - South Wales diesel service - Monday 17th June 1957 - W79087 is at the head of the 12.25pm to Cardiff General (via Stratford-upon-Avon). As the clock shows the departure is delayed as had to back out from platform 12 where it was behind another 3-car set that may have failed, or it was just at the wrong end of an incoming set. An often used publicity image (from the Swindon Works Collection, negative 5CR109) showing the interior of a buffet from a Swindon 79xxx series Inter-City DMU. The July 1957 image was captioned "Diesel railcar - snacks with passengers" and the same passengers appeared in other Western Region publicity images and so were possibly BR office staff. The pelmets and serving hatch surround was white/pink stripes. The serving hatch arrangement is interesting as others of the small batch of eight vehicles had wooden roller shutters.
