Brake shoes would wear down with use and a maintenance requirement was to keep a consistant gap between the brake show and the wheels so that the brakes would work effeciently. Too big a gap and more movement was required in all the brakegear to squeeze the brakeshoes to the wheels, too close and the brakeshoes could rub or clasp the wheels too quickly.
This handwritten sheet, which I found in amongst some other DMU maintenance paperwork and probably dates to the 1960s, details the process involved.
