Battery Multiple Unit

British Railways experimented with a 2-car battery set on the Deeside line.

Using new Derby Lightweight bodies, conversion work done at Cowlairs included adding a battery and traction motors. It began work on the Aberdeen to Ballater route from 1958.

After four years it was withdrawn from passenger use but taken on by the Railway Technical Centre at Derby for use in automatic train operation tests. It is now preserved.

Details about the unit in preservation can be found here.
