Although commonly known as Park Royal sets, they were ordered from British United Transport (B.U.T.) and built at the Crossley Motor works in Stockport (part of the ACV group). The 20 two-car sets each had seating for 16 first class and 100 second class.
For almost the first decade most of the Class worked in the Birmingham area based in Walsall, a few worked the St Albans / Watford branches. In 1967 they were concentrated in Chester depot working North Wales and Cambrian Coast services. Four sets migrated south to the Western Region.
The last vehicle was withdrawal from passenger use in 1983, some saw further departmental use and a few vehicles were preserved.
