Cars 51087 59040 53847 are seen awaiting departure from the then platform 5 at Newcastle with an evening commuter service, 16/9/87. The front car is Class 119, the other two are Class 116. Adjacent in the then platform 4 are Mk 1 coaches (distinguishable from DMU stock by the window frames and Commonwealth bogies), probably a locomotive-hauled Pacer substitution - these were invariably three coaches in length, and their positioning relative to the DMU suggests a locomotive may be 'trapped' at the buffer stops. Class 119 Cross-Country set B590 (51087 + 59418 + 51058) was entering Droitwich Spa station with a Birmingham New Street (via Bromsgrove) to Hereford when I took this image on 6 July 1985. The main point of this viewpoint was to include the centre pivot lower quadrant signals in case they were replaced with colour lights in the near future. They weren't, and still are in use in 2024 unlike the trackwork leaving the former coal yard which has long been removed. Peter Tandy.
