On one of the surviving remnants of the former Southern Railway 'withered arm' in North Devon, the British Telecom yellow liveried Class 117 three-car DMU formed of cars 51302, 59469 & 51317 (P460), was approaching Umberleigh on a glorious Summer evening with 18.33 Barnstaple to Exeter St Davids service on July 25th 1987. In a lovely Yellow livery unit Class 118 DMU P460 (51317 + 59469 + 51302) is seen at the head of the queue at Exeter St Davids on the 20.15 service to Exmouth on the 11th of May 1985. Not sure what service the 50 was on. The KDH Archive.

A Class 118 DMU, Laira allocated Birmingham R.C.& W. set P460 (51317 + 59469 + 51302) at St. Erth on Thursday 19 September 1985. Ian 10B.
The Hertfordshire Railtours 'Gunnislake Goliath' railtour at Exeter St.David's formed of DEMU 1032 on 21/12/85. On the right stands the colourful class 118 DMU set no. P460 (51302 + 59469 + 51317) in all over British Telecom advertising livery which was painted unlike today's vinyl wraps. The colour scheme had been applied to raise awareness that BT was now a private company having been sold off by the Government in a share issue during November 1984. This unit was thus quite unusual when it got repainted in February 1985 as back then BR was still very much corporate blue and grey. It is seen working the 10.10 Barnstaple to Exmouth. Class 118 sets P461 + P460 at Laira depot on 26th April 1986. That day they worked the Plymouth Railway Circle 'Class 118 Farewell' railtour. Closest is P461 (51303 + 59470* + 51318), three vehicles that would be transferred to Bristol the next day. Behind is the unmistakable P460 (51302 + 59469 + 51317), they would follow to Bristol with the start of the summer timetable on 11 May. The farewell was short lived, both would be back at Laira - P460 a few weeks later, P461 at the start of August. *Keith noted the centre car in this set as 59478, another Laira vehicle that would transfer the same day and was soon noted running in the set. While on holiday in South Devon in 1987 we noted this Class 118 DMU with set number P460 several times. Here it is departing Dawlish on 3 July 1987 working the 11.06 Paignton-Exeter St Davids. The unit was very distinctive in its yellow livery advertising British Telecom. The individual cars were 51317 / 59469 / 51302. Lewis Bevan.
