Having arrived at journeys end on one of the well-patronised services from Manchester Victoria, and with Driving Motor Brake Second M50474 bringing up the rear of a six-car formation, alighted passengers were making their way out of the station at Blackpool North on an overcast August 12th 1979. Martyn Hilbert.
Normally used on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North services, one of the three-Car Newton Heath allocated Class 104 sets complete with its white bodyside stripe, was working the Kirkham to Blackpool South shuttle service on September 19th 1979. M50474 arrives from Kirkham along a route that was still double track into the magnificent station at St-Annes-On-The-Sea. Martyn Hilbert.
The view through bridge 26 looking towards Kirkham North Junction as a 6-Car Class 104 formation takes the station avoiding line with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on Saturday August 2nd 1980. The leading car is M50474 one of the large fleet of 104's then allocated to Newton Heath Depot. This was before the construction of the Kirkham by-pass which now crosses the line adjacent to the signalbox. The Coast Line to Blackpool South can be seen diverging away on the left, whilst behind the outer home signal on the Blackpool bound line is one of the brick piers that once carried the flyover that took trains from the Marton Direct Line (From Blackpool Central) over the Blackpool North route, the ramp onto the up direction station avoiding line being at the West side of the signalbox. Martyn Hilbert.

The passengers on the Poynton Parish Puffa were treated at Stratford-upon-Avon to a visit by the steam locomotive 46229 Duchess of Hamilton on 29 June 1985 although I don't recall taking any pictures of this. The return working of the steam special left a short while before the DMU (BX480, presumably 53474/59152/53420 and BX496, presumably 52062/59155/51947) went back to Cheshire and I photographed the latter from the window of the signal box. The industrial units in the background are the site of the erstwhile Stratford-upon-Avon shed and coaling stage. The entire backdrop is virtually unrecognisable nowadays and the signal box itself was demolished many years ago. Peter Tandy.

Newton Heath allocated two-car Class 104 DMU 53474 + 53427 in Whitby station on 24 August 1985 with 1Z36 Yorkshire Coast Express. Robert Thomas.
Newton Heath based class 104 2-car DMU set no. N674 (presumably 53474 + 53427) sits in the bay platform at Stalybridge with the local service to Stockport on May 3, 1988. This shot was taken when there was still 16 trains a day each way. It would then become a parliamentry service with one train a week on a Friday in one direction only leaving Stockport at 09.22. By running this token service the railway did not have to go through the lengthy statutory close notice period for a line closure. The route became largely obsolete when the Windsor link line opened in West Manchester. Adrian Nicholls.

On a snowy winters day Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu headed by the first of the class, M53420 with M59152, M53474, stand in my home village of Furness Vale, with a Buxton-Manchester Piccadilly service, 27th January 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu (M53420, M59152, M53474) breezes through Heaton Chapel with a Buxton-Manchester Piccadilly service, overtaking 25kv class 304 emu 304013 as it slows for its station stop. 9th March 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
Stratford-upon-Avon used to be the destination for many special trains although the number of such workings has lessened in recent years. This picture shows one of these, the Poynton Parish Puffa, standing in the long-gone "cold store" sidings on 29 June 1985. This train was formed of class 108+104 combination (closest being BX496, presumably 51947/59155/52062, the other was BX480, presumably 53420/59152/53474) and, obviously enough I suppose, ran from Poynton in Cheshire, which incidentally is a very attractively decorated station, adorned with many enamel advertisements. Peter Tandy.

Newton Heath depot contains two Class 104s and many Pacers on January 30, 1988. Closest is M53427 + M53474, at the rear is a mixed livery set. Hamish Stevenson.
BRC&W Class 104 2-car DMU, 53427 + 53474, Manchester Piccadilly on 18-2-88. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53427 and presumably M53474 was topping the climb from Farington Curve Junction at Lodge Lane on Farington Moss with a Preston to Ormskirk service on March 4th 1988. The partly dismantled former Up Line, taken of use in 1983 is visible alongside the 104. To the right of the this view was the site of the former Moss Lane Junction. Until 1972 there was a useful connecting double track link from the Ormskirk Line to Lostock Hall on the East Lancashire line which once enabled trains to run direct from Liverpool to East Lancashire. The link was the also the route that most stopping Preston to Ormskirk/Liverpool Exchange services used, via the now dismantled East Lancashire 'Preston Extension' via Todd Lane Junction. With the passage of time, this once open view is now completely tree-lined. Martyn Hilbert.
