Refurbished Class 116 set TS543 with M50842 closest at Worcester Shrub Hill. Date unknown. John Law.
Class 116 set TS543 (50842 presumably leading) departs from Leicester London Road with a Birmingham New Street service on 9 May 1981. Steve Davies Collection.
53842 leads set TS614 (with a Met-Camm centre car) at Gloucester in September 1984. Michael Mensing.
53842 (TS614) is in the centre road at Reading while mail bags are being loaded onto 47 471's train, 18th December 1984. 54A South Dock.
An early morning image from Birmingham Moor Street taken on 3 May 1985 with class 116 TS614 (presumably 53842 + 59609 + 53895) having just arrived and being prepared to go out again. The next working was to Stratford-upon-Avon but instead of the then usual route via Henley-in-Arden it was routed via Dorridge and Hatton North and West Junctions. The destination panel was slightly misleading because the train didn't call at Hatton station but had to be used to differentiate it from those running along the North Warwickshire Line. This was the only passenger train to use this route at the time with only the very occasional charter and engineering working also covering the route. Peter Tandy.
Tyseley Hybrid set formed of Class 116 Driving power cars 53842 (50842) + Class 101 Centre car 59527 + Class 116 53895 (50895) at Birmingham Moor Street in September 1987 with a service to Shirley Don Taggart.
Two Class 116 DMUs at Cardiff Central with what is thought to be the 10:42 (SO) Rhymney-Penarth service on 5 June 1976. Closest is refurbished C311, presumably 50895 + 59350 + 50842. Robert Thomas.
Refurbished Class 116 DMU set C311 (presumably 50895 + 59350 + 50842) passes Kidderminster Junction signalbox on 7 August 1976. It is displaying 'Special' on the destination blind but Michael recorded the train as the 16:50 Hereford - Birmingham New Street. Michael Mensing.
In 1979 a series of special trains was arranged over the Coalbrookdale branch to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the building of the Ironbridge. A temporary platform was set up at Coalbrookdale (just past mp161) and here is the 11.45 ex-Wolverhampton at that temporary platform on 15 July 1979; it will return to Wolverhampton as the 16.20 from Coalbrookdale. The train is formed of a Tyseley-based Class 116 dmu, set TS543, with coaches 50895/59350/50842. Lewis Bevan.
Summer Saturdays on the North Wales Coast route obviously brought many additional services to the area, but on weekdays, as well, there were a few unusual workings to be found during the summer months. Here a West Midlands PTE 6-car DMU formation working the 0941 Birmingham New St - Llandudno service brakes for the station stop at Prestatyn made up of Tyseley depot sets TS 624 + TS 614 formed of M51130 + M59615 + M51143 and M53895 + M59609 + M53842 (Class 116 driving vehicles with Class 127 trailers displaced from the BedPan electrification scheme). Nigel Mack.
M53895 + M59527 + M53842 + M51146 seen at Ely North Junction, June 13, 1987. Class 101 middle cars were often used on Tyseley sets. Nicholas Youngman.
Class 116 set TS357 (presumably M53895 + M59527 + M53842) - with a Met-Camm centre car - pass by at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1987. The passengers at the windows and people on the lineside ahead suggest there may be a(nother) train of interest about to pass. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Golden light at Newton Heath Depot at dawn as the sun illuminated first generation DMU cars stabled on September 15th 1990. In the foreground are withdrawn Class 104s, M53421 & M53464, with out-of-service M53493 & M53444 on a parallel siding, the units being separated by a 20 Ton Brake Van. In the left background is a split 2-Car Class 101, the bodyside damage suggests the DMBS is 51227. Also present were two Class 116 Suburban DMU cars, 53839 & 53842. Martyn Hilbert.
Withdrawn and damaged first generation DMU sets awaiting their fate, were stabled at the side of Newton Heath Depot on September 15th 1990. A pair of weary-looking Derby built Class 116 Suburban Driving Motor Brake Seconds 53842 & 53839 were keeping company with a fire-damaged BRCW Class 104 two-car set formed of cars 53532 & 53487. The adjacent sidings with diesel soaked trackwork have clearly been the resting place for other withdrawn units, the ground being strewn with various fittings and components including an wooden emergency evacuation ladder from a brake compartment. Martyn Hilbert.
