53246 was renumbered 977393 and in 1987 sent to Cardiff Cathays as a third vehicle to convert to an Ultrasonic Test vehicle alongside 51433 / 53167 (977391/2 with an ex-SR EMU car in-between). In the event it was not used, and languished at Cathays until its closure in 1990 when it moved to Radyr, where it is seen here in circa 1993. It is covered in large stickers proclaimed as being stripped of asbestos by Vic Berrys. It was cut up at MC Metals in Glasgow in June '93.
