53246 was renumbered 977393 and in 1987 sent to Cardiff Cathays as a third vehicle to convert to an Ultrasonic Test vehicle alongside 51433 / 53167 (977391/2 with an ex-SR EMU car in-between). In the event it was not used, and languished at Cathays until its closure in 1990 when it moved to Radyr, where it is seen here in circa 1993. It is covered in large stickers proclaimed as being stripped of asbestos by Vic Berrys. It was cut up at MC Metals in Glasgow in June '93. Chris Adams.

Deep in former Furness Railway territory, the Ultrasonic Test Train passes southbound through Cark & Cartmel on June 2nd 1994. The nearest car is DB977391 a former Class 101 DMU vehicle ex 51433, with another Class 101 driving car at the rear, ex 53167. The coach in the middle was 62483, a former 4-REP Southern Region Waterloo-Bournemouth EMU Driving Car that had been converted to a test coach. Martyn Hilbert.

901001 (977391 + 999602 + 977392) at Stratford-upon-Avon circa 2004. I remember that the train standing alongside the test unit, 166201, should have been in platform 3 and its presence in P2 really mucked up the chances of a decent shot. I almost gave up the post-scanning processing because of the intensity of the lights needed for the train's video cameras but after about 45 minutes work in Photoshop CS2 arrived at this image. Class 101 was still active on the main line in 2005 in the form of 901001 (977391 + 999602 + 977392) being used as a test unit for Network Rail. This picture comes from 17 September 2005 as the train operated a 4Z08 from Derby through Hatton. Peter Tandy.
Network Rail's class 101 DMMU 901001 (977391 + 999602 + 977392) was booked to run to the south-west from Derby on 17 June 2006. It ran nearly one hour early and is seen here at Stoke Prior having just descended the Lickey Incline. It's good that it is still possible to still see a "proper" DMU, albeit in a colour scheme previously alien to the class. Peter Tandy.
