The peace of Battersby station is momentarily disturbed as Whitby and Middlesbrough Esk Valley services briefly meet and reverse. On 23rd August 1988, Metropolitan-Cammell Class 101 two-car units 53240 - 51467 and 51217 - 51515 form Middlesbrough and Whitby-bound services respectively. The surviving NER 1907-built water crane is a remarkable survivor.
