Two-car Norwich Class 101 DMU set 75 at the South end of Halesworth station. Ipswich is on the destination blind and the set is likely changing platforms. The dent at the cantrail above the second passenger window identifies the DMBS at 51217 which dates it after May 1984 but before the line was singled and RETB went live in 1985. Class 47/4 47433 hauls dead DMU cars 51217 and 54370 at Carlisle with a local service to Newcastle on 31/08/89. This formation had been hauled around for at least a couple of days, so had not just failed. Acceleration with a Class 47 would have been brisk. Locomotive haulage of local services in the north-east were not uncommon through the 1980s, due to shortages of available DMUs, including failures of the then new Class 143 Pacers later in the decade. An influx of former Western Region Class 142s plus replacement of the troublesome SCG mechanical gearboxes with Voith hydraulic transmissions, from 1988, saw the eventual withdrawal of the last remaining Class 101s from the area in September 1989, although locomotive haulage of rakes of three coaches continued until 1990. The peace of Battersby station is momentarily disturbed as Whitby and Middlesbrough Esk Valley services briefly meet and reverse. On 23rd August 1988, Metropolitan-Cammell Class 101 two-car units 53240 - 51467 and 51217 - 51515 form Middlesbrough and Whitby-bound services respectively. The surviving NER 1907-built water crane is a remarkable survivor. Gordon Edgar.
Simultaneous arrivals are commonplace at principal rail termini, but such an occurrence was hardly expected at the remote outpost of Battersby. During the early evening of 23rd August 1988, the smartly dressed signal lady is poised to accept the single-line token from the arriving Whitby to Middlesbrough service, formed of Class 101 units 51467 - 53240, whilst arriving right on cue from Middlesbrough is the Whitby service, formed of Class 101 units 51515 - 51217. Rather sadly, the 1902-built NER Type C2b signal box was to close almost one year later, on 20th August 1989, when control was transferred to Nunthorpe signal box. Gordon Edgar.
