Details

Metro-Cammell Class 101 (1959 batch) Local Passenger 3-car dmu No.51451 (Class 101/2) No.59545 (Class 171) & No.51518 (Class 101/2) on display in Marylebone station, mid-July 1974.

This was the first dmu to be refurbished on a trial basis to establish what kind of refurbishment program should be adopted for the first generation dmu's to extend their life owing to the lack of money for new stock. Each car was refurbished to a different standard and the highest standard I thought was excellent. Unfortunately this was too expensive to be adopted in the programme. I worked in the Railways Directorate of the Department of Environment at this time and visited the set as part of my job. The platform this set is on was demolished and replaced by a new office block in the late 1980's
