Class 117 DMU at Appleford

Details

The staple motive power for local services on the London Division of the Western Region for over 25 years has been the Pressed Steel built Class 117 DMUs. Here, approaching Appleford, with a late afternoon stopping service from Oxford - Reading on 3rd July 1987 is set L404 formed of W51337 + W59489 + W51379.

W51337 + W59489 + W51379 were delivered new to 81D, Reading, in March 1960, and remained as a set at the Berkshire depot until W51337 was withdrawn on 22nd October 1990.

W59489 remained at RG until 20th March 1992 before being transferred to TS and then HA, from where it was withdrawn in April 1998, whilst W51379 lingered on at RG until its withdrawal on 27th March 1992.

All three vehicles were later scrapped. The two Driving cars meeting their fate at Booth's of Rotherham and the trailer at MC Metals, Springburn/
